Concerned about Ovarian Cancer?
The OvPlex™ test is now available in the UK.
Ovarian cancer is known as a ‘silent disease’, because it does not always show clear symptoms. As a result, most women are diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease, which is associated with poor survival rates.1
Ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in women in the UK and the most common cause of gynaecological cancer death.2
There are nearly 7,000 diagnoses and nearly 4,500 deaths every year in Britain.3 That equates to one woman dying from ovarian cancer every two hours, yet a survey by the charity Ovarian Cancer Action in 2007, discovered that only one in six women were even aware of the disease.
Early detection of ovarian cancer increases five year survival rates to almost 90%.4 With this in mind, increasing awareness of the disease by educating women and GP's on the possible signs and symptoms is critical.
The good news is, that a new diagnostic test called OvPlex™ became available in the UK in February 2010.
OvPlex™ - a superior performing diagnostic for earlier detection of ovarian cancer in symptomatic women.* |
(* Based on the HealthLinx Ltd Phase 2 Biomarker Trial data.)
OvPlex™ targets symptomatic women and has been designed as a simple blood test for earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer and is statistically significantly better than CA125 alone (the current standard blood test) in the detection of ovarian cancer. OvPlex™ outperforms CA125 for the detection of ovarian cancer in all stages of the disease - particularly, early stage. As mentioned, if a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer at an early stage of the disease, five year survival rates are greatly increased.
